How Long Does a Dental Bridge Last?

When several teeth or molars are missing, we place a dental bridge. A dental bridge is a span between two teeth or molars where a prosthetic tooth is placed between them. Not only does this enhance the aesthetics of your smile, but it also ensures a better chewing ability, improving overall oral function.

The treatment in steps

  • Grinding down the tooth or molar

First, a part of the tooth or molar is ground down until there is enough space to make a bridge. The teeth on either side of the missing tooth are ground down as well, to provide support for the whole dental bridge. If necessary, you will be given a local anesthetic.

  • Making an impression

The dentist then makes an impression of your entire jaw or the part containing the ground-down tooth. To do this, the dentist places an impression tray with a rubbery substance in your mouth. This creates an impression into which plaster is later poured in a dental laboratory. The dental bridge is made on this plaster model.

  • Bite registration

With bite registration, the dentist determines how the teeth and molars of your lower and upper jaw fit together. For this, an impression of the opposite jaw is required. For this, the dentist uses a wax plate.

  • Determine color

If the bridge is at the front of the mouth, it usually has a tooth-colored outer layer. Together with your dentist, you will find a suitable color.

  • Temporary provision

For your comfort and to protect the ground tooth or molar, the dentist will make a temporary provision (temporary crown). Do not eat hard or sticky products with it. The temporary crown is not designed for this. If the temporary crown breaks or becomes loose, contact your dentist.

  • Fixing

At the final appointment, your dentist will fit the bridge into your mouth and fix it in place. They will apply a quick-setting cement to the inside of the crown or bridge. They will then slide the bridge into place and press it firmly.

Maintenance of bridges

Daily oral hygiene is extra important for dental bridges. The gums around the dental bridge in particular must be cleaned thoroughly. A vulnerable spot is the edge of the bridge. Plaque can easily build up there. Plaque causes cavities along the edge of your bridge and inflammation of the gums. Brush this area carefully with a soft toothbrush and use toothpicks, interdental brushes and/or dental floss.

How long does a dental bridge last?

The materials are so durable that a dental bridge will last at least ten years or more. Good oral hygiene has a great influence on durability. Of course, an accident can cause premature damage to a dental bridge.
