Consistent Checkups and Cleanings are Crucial in Children’s Dentistry

Just like all adults, children should visit us for routine children’s dentistry services, such as checkups and cleanings. These cleanings are beneficial every six months. These regular children’s dentistry exams will help your child, you, and us to avoid unwanted cavities, tooth decay and gum disease. Just like a dental cleaning for you, Dr. Crystal Dental will remove persistent and damaging plaque and debris from your child’s teeth. We always give your child an oral exam, to make sure their teeth are coming in properly, that there is appropriate jaw development, as well as dental risk assessments at each visit. As your child grows older, we will also monitor them to make sure that their adult teeth are erupting properly.

Oral exams are a foundational part of children’s dentistry. It is extremely important to make sure that your child does not miss any cleanings and exams. What might have been a small cavity that we would have corrected early can grow rapidly for a child and end up requiring a more severe procedure. This can be an aspect of children’s dentistry that can certainly be difficult for any child of any age to undergo. Our primary focus is on prevention, but when the need arises for treatment Dr. Crystal Dental can provide options for treatment that are comfortable for your child.

Why is Dr. Crystal Dental Your Perfect Dentist for Pediatric Care?

A major facet of children’s dentistry is to find the right dentist for you and your child. You will want to make sure that you find a dentist that is qualified to perform children’s dentistry and does so on a regular basis. You will also want to make sure the dentist that you choose is good with children and is friendly. Dr. Crystal Dental is indeed both. Visiting the dentist can be challenging for your child, which is why our entire team ensures their comfort throughout the experience.

One of the added benefits of choosing Dr. Crystal Dental is your child’s ability to keep the same dentist past their childhood and into their teen and adult years. They can continue to visit us, a team that they know and trust.

If you wish to try the family friendly staff at Dr. Crystal Dental, consider an appointment for yourself first before your child. This will give you a feel for how we function, the attention to detail, the quality of our services, and our overall demeanor. This will define and expand your comfort zone when scheduling an appointment for your child. We need to get your child’s next checkup and cleaning on the schedule to establish a Dental Home. Dr. Crystal Dental will provide high-quality dental services for your child, all with a friendly smile.

Simple Tips to Help Avoid Decay

As a parent, taking some early preventative steps can help to guard your child against tooth decay, even before their first dental visit:

  • Before the first tooth erupts, you may use a damp cloth or silicone finger brush to wipe you baby’s gums, just as you would if there were teeth.
  • After the first tooth erupts, you can use a damp cloth or soft bristled brush after feedings, but most importantly after the nighttime feedings to help remove milk or formula off their teeth.
  • As they teeth erupt, make sure to brush in the morning and in the evening with a soft bristled brush and water and ask us when it is ok to introduce a small, rice grain size, amount of toothpaste.
  • Always remember never to put your baby to bed with a bottle with anything in it other than water. Babies put to bed with bottles of milk can develop what is known as “baby bottle tooth decay” – teeth are cavities that commonly affect the top four front teeth on a young child, and it can spread to other teeth in the mouth.
  • Bottles should be weaned off of by age one and switching over to a 360⁰ cup to establish proper swallowing patterns, which aid in proper jaw development.
  • Bottles or sippy cups should only have water between mealtimes to lower risk for cavities.
  • Children should have an adult assist with brushing until close to age 7, or until they can tie their own shoelaces. It’s always helpful to continue monitoring their brushing to make sure they are spending enough time and helping them to clean any areas they may have missed.
  • Limit frequency of snacks and sugary beverages throughout the day
  • Increase the amount of whole foods (such as apples, carrots, etc) along with water to help prevent cavities.
  • Proper nasal breathing is also part of good dental health – it lowers risk for cavities as well as promotes appropriate jaw development. A child who snores and with an open mouth posture can show dental changes that can be detected early. Aside from the dental changes, there can be other underlying issues associated.
