When damage occurs to the tooth structure above the gumline, whether it is from large filings breaking down, excessive chipping, or decay, a crown is a desirable option to bring that tooth to functional and esthetic health. Crowns can be a single tooth option, or in more advanced cases, several teeth as part of full mouth rehabilitation to correct larger bite or esthetic issues. Crowns are shaded to the color of your existing teeth and can be created using a variety of materials such as porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, metal, composite resin, or a combination of materials. If several crowns are being made, the shade is carefully selected to match the surrounding teeth.
Dr. Crystal Dental utilized the most advanced technology and laboratories to customize your crown should you need one. Digital scans are taken and the fit, shape, and shade are precisely made and are unique to every individual. A dental crown is recommended for you if your tooth if it is damaged by cracking, decay, significant fractures, or bite changes. Dental crowns can also be used if you are seeking a cosmetic change. It can improve the look of an unsightly tooth or protect weak areas of a tooth.

Are You a Candidate for a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns can be beneficial in the following situations:
- To protect a weak tooth from decay, from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.
- To cover and protect a tooth with a large filling when there is not much tooth left.
- To serve as an abutment support for a dental bridge.
- To cover a misshapen or severely discolored tooth.
- To restore a broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down.
- To complete a dental implant.
- To restore a worn bite
- To make a cosmetic improvement.
For your child, a dental crown may be used on primary, baby teeth to:
- Protect a tooth at high risk for tooth decay, especially when the child has difficulty keeping up with daily oral hygiene.
- Save a tooth that has been so damaged by decay that it cannot support a filling.
- Decrease the frequency of anesthesia for a child unable to fully cooperate with the requirements of proper dental care because of age, behavior, or medical history.
- These crowns are completed in one visit and are typically made of stainless steel, which is the strongest and longest lasting crown that can be made for a baby tooth.
- A white or resin material may be used for a baby tooth crown if white tooth replacement is desired.
The Different Materials Used for Dental Crowns
Different kinds of materials can be used in dental crowns, including:
- porcelain
- ceramic
- zirconia
- metal
- composite resin
- a combination of materials – such as ceramic/zirconia or porcelain/metal
When selecting the material for your crown, Dr. Crystal Dental will consider factors such as:
- The location and size of the tooth.
- How much of the tooth will be visible when you smile?
- The position and condition of your gum tissue.
- The function of the tooth that needs the crown.
- How much of the natural tooth is remaining?
- The color of the surrounding teeth.
You can also discuss with our team if you have a personal preference. This decision is balanced with your specific clinical presentation and what material is best for you considering your needs and desires.
The Dental Crown Procedure
The preparation for a dental crown usually requires two visits, the first appointment involves examining and preparing the tooth, the second visit involves the placement of the final crown.
At the first visit in preparation for a crown, we will take X-rays to examine the roots of the tooth receiving the crown and the surrounding bone to ensure the foundational structures are healthy. If the tooth has extensive decay or if there is a risk of infection to the tooth's pulp, a root canal treatment may need to be performed before the crown is placed.
For the crown restoration appointment, you will be gently numbed with a local anesthetic so that your tooth and surrounding gum tissue are comfortable during the procedure. Next the tooth is reshaped to make room for the new, customized crown. The amount removed depends on the type of crown chosen, with the intention to conserve as much natural tooth structure without compromising strength and longevity of your new restoration. If a large area of the tooth is missing from decay or damage, the remaining tooth structure will be disinfected and a foundational core buildup will be placed to strengthening and protect the natural remaining tooth structure, as well as support the new crown.
After reshaping the tooth, we will take digital scans of the tooth and your bite. This along with your customized tooth shade will be sent immediately to the dental laboratory to begin creating your new crown. You will leave our office with a temporary crown cemented on with a soft cement which will protect your tooth and hold the space while your new crown is being made. Your crown will be ready for you typically within a few weeks, and your next appointment will be prescheduled for your convenience.
At your second visit, Dr. Crystal Dental will gently numb your tooth and surrounding gums with a local anesthetic to be sure you are comfortable during your procedure. The temporary crown is removed, and the tooth structure is cleaned thoroughly. When the new crown is tried in, it is meticulously checked for a precision fit, bite, and color. An X-ray will be taken to ensure an excellent result, and the crown will be bonded securely in place using the best materials.

Life Expectancy of a Dental Crown
The life span of a dental crown can be dependent on a variety of different variables. If you are taking good care of your teeth, practicing a good oral hygiene routine twice daily and staying away from foods that tend to cause decay or crack the surface of teeth, your crown should last several decades. The average amount of time is between 5-15 years, but some dental crowns have been known to last up to 30 years with proper care and a healthy bite.
