Dental bonding is a popular and common treatment solution if you have gaps between your teeth, chips in your teeth, cracked teeth, decaying teeth or even if you have exposed roots from other dental conditions. The bonding compound is made from a composite resin material that is strong, pliable, and can be shaped and molded to look and feel like your natural teeth. It is not the addition of an appliance like a dental bridge or dental implant, but it is a substance that can be sculpted to restore the look and function of your teeth with considerable ease.

The Benefits of Dental Bonding

There are several benefits with having dental bonding applied to your teeth. One benefit is that it will immediately improve the look of your teeth and smile. Here is a quick list:

  • To repair decayed teeth, composite resins are used to fill cavities.
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth.
  • To improve the appearance of discolored teeth.
  • To close spaces between teeth.
  • To make your teeth look longer.
  • To change the shape of teeth.
  • To aid in correcting bite issues.
  • As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings.
  • To protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gums recede.

This will come as a relief if you have struggled with cracked or chipped teeth and cannot wait to get them repaired. Another benefit is that the bonding will also strengthen the tooth. When teeth are cracked, they are more susceptible to bacteria, infection, and further damage.

Restoring the shape of a chipped or cracked tooth means that some of the strength will be restored as well. Another benefit is that it is instant. Most dental bonding treatments can be completed in one visit with Dr. Crystal Dental, meaning you can enjoy your new smile immediately. You can have your dental bonding touched up at future dental visits if the bonding begins to wear, or if it needs to be replaced.

The Dental Bonding Procedure

First, Dr. Crystal Dental will do a thorough examination to identify if there are other issues prior to confirming that dental bonding is the appropriate solution. Next, we will use a shade guide to select a shade of resin that will match the natural color of your tooth. Before applying the dental bonding, the surface of the tooth is roughened and lightly coated with a conditioning liquid so that the bonding material will adhere to the enamel. Once the tooth is prepared, our artistically creative team will apply the putty-like resin to the tooth and sculpt, mold, and shape it until we have achieved the proper shape. Then the dental bonding is hardened with an ultraviolet light. After the material is set, we can complete any finishing touches, such as additional shaping and polishing of the newly bonded tooth.

It usually only takes between 30 minutes to an hour to complete the dental bonding procedure. If you are having multiple teeth done, it may take longer or more than one appointment to complete. You can return to your normal daily activities immediately since the material is its full strength immediately after your appointment.

The Life Expectancy of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is not considered a permanent restoration, but it can certainly last a long time. When cared for properly, and when you visit Dr. Crystal Dental on a regular schedule for exams and touch-ups, dental bonding can last for many years.

Taking care of your teeth will help extend the life of a bonded tooth. Suggestions include:

  • Brushing your teeth at least twice daily and flossing once a day.
  • Avoid both hard food and candy.
  • Do not bite your fingernails.
  • Avoid coffee, tea, and tobacco for the first two days after the procedure to avoid stains.
  • Schedule your regular preventative exams and dental cleanings every six months.

Call us if you accidentally chip or break the dental bonding material, or if you feel any rough or sharp edges after the procedure. If you have severely damaged teeth, the dental bonding may need to be replaced with another more permanent type of restoration later, such as porcelain.

Comprehensive Dentistry

Comprehensive dentistry with Dr. Crystal Schneider, involves the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the teeth, gums and jaw. She believes that preventive care is the most important aspect of comprehensive dentistry. Dr. Schneider aims to identify and treat problems while they’re still small, which can save you time, money and more extensive dental treatment.

Cosmetic Dentistry

An attractive smile can boost your confidence, help you make better first impressions on others, and improve your personal and professional life. We provide several cosmetic dental treatments that can subtly enhance your smile, and there are many other more dramatic treatments, often called “smile makeovers,” that can give you the smile of your dreams.

Specialized Dentistry

Missing teeth can take the joy out of the everyday things we love, from smiling and talking with confidence to eating our favorite foods. All of these things can become easier again with specialized dental care. Dr. Schneider offers advanced treatments that will not just restore your smile to its former health – they’ll make it look and feel even better than before!

Dental Bonding versus Veneers

Dental bonding is designed for the use in simple cosmetic improvements that do not impact the function of your teeth or gums. Cracks, chips, and gaps are the most common issues that dental bonding will correct. They differ from veneers in that veneers are made of layered glass ceramics and are crafted outside in a dental lab. The veneer is designed to look and feel like your real teeth, and it adheres to your tooth with a bonded cement.
