We may ask you to confirm this information at subsequent visits so we can stay up-to-date and fully informed to serve you. As a courtesy to you, we file all claim forms electronically, provide postage for special claims, and we track claims for you.
The Procedure for Dental Cleaning
Regular dental cleanings usually come in conjunction with a comprehensive oral exam. Once your oral exam has been completed, unless Dr. Crystal Dental has diagnosed gum disease, we will perform a dental cleaning, or prophylaxis. If you have gum disease, our team will recommend a deep teeth cleaning to treat the infection and disease first and then allow your gums to heal.
During the preventative dental cleaning, a special polishing paste or air powder polisher will be used to remove and disrupt the soft bacteria known as plaque or biofilm around your teeth along with staining. We will also carefully use handheld scalers and/or an ultrasonic scalers to gently remove debris, calculus, and stain from the outside surfaces of your teeth, between your teeth and along your gum line. Finally, we will carefully floss between your teeth using dental floss to ensure that all debris and softened bacteria is removed.
During your regular dental cleaning, you will receive diagnostic and preventive services from Dr. Crystal Dental as well as any needed educational information and personalized recommendations.
The Diagnostic services will include:
- Reviewing and updating your medical and dental history, including information about heart problems, pregnancy, diabetes, and medications, which could impact your oral health.
- Oral cancer examination and screening.
- An extensive evaluation of your gum tissue, along with six points of measurement to check gum health to ensure you able to maintain your results at home.
- Checking your biting alignment, chewing, and swallowing patterns.
- Thorough examination of your teeth to detect decay.
- X-rays to identify any problems below the surface.
Preventive services will include:
- The removal of damaging plaque and tartar.
- Identifying stains and possibly removing.
- Fluoride application if beneficial.
- Possible dental sealants (for children).
- Polishing teeth, checking any restorations including fillings and crowns.
- Cleaning and adjustment of dentures, partial dentures, or nightguards.
Educational services may include:
- Tooth brushing and flossing techniques and improvements.
- Nutritional counseling for your dietary needs.
- Recommendations for future treatment: when to return for follow-up hygiene treatment, periodontal (gum) concerns or restorative options.
- An evaluation of your self-care effectiveness.
- Tobacco use suggestions.
Once your dental cleaning is finished, we will follow up with you about any treatment that has been recommended and make any necessary follow up appointments.

We recommend that all adults receive dental cleanings at least twice a year, unless other recommendations have been made by Dr. Crystal Dental. Good oral health is important regardless of how old you are. In fact, as we age, our risk for an oral infection and bone loss will continue to change over time. Changes that affect our oral health may be changes in overall health, hormones, saliva, and diet.
