Dentures
A denture is a removable restorative appliance for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Two types of dentures are available, complete, or partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Having a full set of healthy teeth can totally change your quality of life. If you are missing several teeth, social situations can become stressful and embarrassing if you feel you need to hide your smile.
Dentures have become a historically a traditional option for patients looking to replace partial or full portions of their teeth. Dentures can protect exposed gums, increase the functionality of the mouth, and once again allow patients to be comfortable with a new healthy smile.

Are You a Possible Candidate for Dentures?
If you are experiencing any of these situations you could be a perfect candidate for dentures:
- If you have lost the majority or all your natural teeth.
- Your gums are receding due to either age or gum disease.
- You are suffering from severe decay requiring multiple extractions.
- The lack of jawbone integrity and density for successful dental implants.
The Different Types of Dentures
You do not have be missing all your teeth to get dentures. There are several types of dentures available if you are needing replacement options for missing teeth:
- Full Sets: When people first think of dentures, they most often are referring to a complete full set. If you receive a full set of dentures, you are missing all your teeth from decay or damage, requiring a full mouth of replacement teeth to restore a healthy smile.
- Partial Sets: If you still have some healthy natural teeth or are considering the possibility of dental implants soon, you can receive a partial set of dentures. These sets are made to sit on the gums next to existing teeth and can be adjusted as dental implants are added.
The Denture Procedure
When you and Dr. Crystal Dental have determined dentures to be the best treatment to restore your smile, there are several steps necessary to create the final product. The specific style and type of dentures for your personal treatment will influence the final length of the process, but for both traditional full and partial dentures you can expect the following steps.
- Dental Impressions- To ensure your dentures will fit securely and comfortably to your gums, we will take an impression of any remaining teeth and gums to help create your appliance. If your case first requires extractions of decayed or damaged teeth, our team will wait to take impressions until the gums have completely healed to reduce the risk of loose dentures because of swelling from the healing process.
- Wax Rims- To correctly measure your bite and alignment, we will use a set of wax rims. When placing the rims in your mouth, Dr. Crystal Dental can gauge how the dentures will need to be formed to achieve a healthy bite.
- Customized Teeth- At some point in your initial appointments, our team will allow you to customize your dentures. By choosing the shade, size, and shape of teeth to be used, you can achieve a personalized and natural look you have always wanted for your smile. The customization of this is done with dental photography and working closely with our lab technicians, as well as utilizing the highest quality of materials.
After gathering all the measurements and details to create your dentures, we will send the information to the dental lab responsible for creating the appliance. This process can vary depending on the treatment.
- Trial Fit- To help you get used to dentures, Dr. Crystal Dental will create a plastic and wax mock-up set to give you an idea of how they will look and feel. This trial helps us make any small adjustments needed to the fit and shape of the dentures before creating the final set.
- Final Fitting- When the mock-up set has been approved, the dental lab will create the final denture set for your restoration. You will return to our office for a final fitting to make any last-minute adjustments needed. Your dentures should feel comfortable and secure before leaving the appointment to prevent any discomfort.
- Check-Up Appointment- In some cases, check-up appointments could be necessary if you feel uncomfortable with the fit of your dentures. Tight or loose-fitting dentures can cause sores and swelling, influencing your desire to wear them daily as needed. Making an appointment with Dr. Crystal Dental at the first sign of a problem is essential in avoiding discomfort and helping you get used to the dentures quicker.
Comprehensive Dentistry
Comprehensive dentistry with Dr. Crystal Schneider, involves the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the teeth, gums and jaw. She believes that preventive care is the most important aspect of comprehensive dentistry. Dr. Schneider aims to identify and treat problems while they’re still small, which can save you time, money and more extensive dental treatment.
Cosmetic Dentistry
An attractive smile can boost your confidence, help you make better first impressions on others, and improve your personal and professional life. We provide several cosmetic dental treatments that can subtly enhance your smile, and there are many other more dramatic treatments, often called “smile makeovers,” that can give you the smile of your dreams.
Specialized Dentistry
Missing teeth can take the joy out of the everyday things we love, from smiling and talking with confidence to eating our favorite foods. All of these things can become easier again with specialized dental care. Dr. Schneider offers advanced treatments that will not just restore your smile to its former health – they’ll make it look and feel even better than before!
Proper Care for Your Dentures
Since dentures are not surgically placed into the mouth, there is minimal discomfort expected. It is typical for upper dentures to feel tighter, while lower dentures to fit looser.
You should wear your dentures during waking hours and remove them at night for proper cleaning. Dentures can also change your appearance and eating habits, causing you to feel slightly self-conscious at first. It is important to be patient during this transition and to realize your dentures will feel more natural the more they are worn.
