The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

The benefits of sedation dentistry can be significant. One of the single most obvious benefits from sedation dentistry is the reduction or elimination of your anxiety experienced during the procedure. We always first work behaviorally with the patient to lessen anxiety first, as sedation is not always necessary for various types of dental anxiety. Sedation dentistry can reduce the fear revolving around the planned procedure and alleviate concerns during treatment. Sedation dentistry can also be a way to manage or reduce sensitivity and gag reflex for patients as well.

One of the interesting benefits of sedation dentistry is that you may feel like your dental procedure lasted only a few minutes, when in fact it might have taken considerably longer. Sedation dentistry allows the team at Dr. Crystal Dental to work faster and more effectively, which converts into a win-win situation, because you will be finished sooner.

The Various Levels of Sedation Dentistry

There are a few options to choose from, which include: local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation.  The best option for you will be based on the type of procedure being performed, but you will be given several choices to help you feel comfortable and less anxious during your appointment.

  • Minimal sedation -- you are awake but totally relaxed.
  • Moderate sedation (formerly called "conscious sedation") -- you might slur your words when speaking and not remember much of the procedure.
  • Deep sedation -- you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.
  • General anesthesia -- you are completely unconscious during the procedure.

Deep sedation and general anesthesia are types of sedation are performed in conjunction with another specialist. This may be performed offsite, or possibly at a local hospital where Dr. Dr. Crystal has maintained privileges since 2012.

The Types of Dental Sedation Available

The sedation options Dr. Crystal Dental offers can be classified as one of two types: conscious sedation and general anesthesia.  During your procedure with conscious sedation, your consciousness is merely depressed. General anesthesia, on the other hand, means that you are totally unconscious for the entire procedure.  You will be unable to feel anything during the procedure and will have no memory of the procedure.

The methods for the delivery of the sedation include:

  • Inhaled minimal sedation- You breathe nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, combined with oxygen through a mask that is placed over your nose. The gas helps you relax. We can easily control the amount of sedation you receive, and the gas wears off quickly. This is the only form of sedation where you may be able to drive yourself home after the procedure.
  • Oral sedation- Depending on the amount given, oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate. For minimal sedation, you simply take a pill. It is usually taken about an hour before the procedure. The pill will make you drowsy, although you will still be awake. A larger dose may be given to produce moderate sedation. You may become groggy enough from moderate oral sedation to fall asleep during the procedure. You usually can, though, be awakened with a gentle shake.
  • IV moderate sedation- You receive the sedative drug through a vein, so it goes works quickly and efficiently. This method allows us to continually adjust the level of sedation.
  • Deep sedation and general anesthesia- You will get medications that will make you either almost unconscious or totally unconscious, deeply asleep, during the procedure. While you are under general anesthesia, you cannot easily be awakened until the effects of the anesthesia wear off or are reversed. This procedure is completed with another specialist or possibly offsite for this level of sedation.

Along with these, the use of sedation for other procedures is oftentimes decided at the discretion of Dr. Crystal Dental.
