The Many Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are commonly used to correct:

  • Teeth that are worn down.
  • Teeth that are chipped or broken.
  • Teeth that are discolored.
  • Stains from tetracycline or other drugs.
  • White spot lesions or Hypocalcifications.
  • Large dental fillings.
  • Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped.
  • Teeth with gaps between them.

The Porcelain Veneers Procedure

There are three steps of the porcelain veneers process: the consultation, the preparation, and the placement.

  • Consultation- To make sure that porcelain veneers are a good solution for you, you will start with a consultation appointment with Dr. Crystal Dental. Discussing your goals and health objectives at this appointment will help determine if porcelain veneers are appropriate. We will also review the veneer options and color shades available.
  • Preparation- At your preparation appointment, we will start by making some room for the veneers to be placed over your existing teeth. We will remove a very thin layer of the tooth enamel. This procedure is usually painless, but we can offer you the option for anesthesia if you are feeling uncomfortable. Next, Dr. Crystal Dental will take an impression of your teeth to use to create the new look you are hoping for with the veneers. We will also choose the appropriate shade of porcelain to match the current color of your teeth or your selected color if you are looking to correct any discoloration. Your veneers will next be created at the dental lab before they are ready for bonding.
  • Placement- The last appointment is rewarding. Your veneers will be ready for placement, and you will get to leave with a healthy and restored smile. First, we will make sure the veneers match the color and shape desired. We may need to trim slightly before the bonding begins if they appear to need slight modification. After the veneers meet our expectations, we need to prepare your teeth by performing a general cleaning, polishing, and then etching of the surfaces of the teeth. Etching means to roughen up the front surface by using an abrasive dental liquid for the veneers to adhere to the teeth. Finally, a bonding cement will be added before setting the veneers on the teeth. If the cement needs assistance in drying, a light will be used to quicken the curing, drying process. When the cement has cured, your treatment is finished. Make sure to speak with us about any follow-up appointments that are needed to ensure the veneers are comfortable.

Different Versions of Veneers Available

There are different types of veneers available to achieve your perfect smile. You will want to review these options with Dr. Crystal Dental during your consultation appointment to make sure you choose the best option for your lifestyle:

  • Porcelain- The most popular version, porcelain is a durable and long-lasting option. Ceramic layers are comprised of dentin and enamel to resemble a natural look and an excellent fit. There will be some limited reduction in your natural tooth size with this method.
  • Minimal Prep- As the name indicates, minimal prep veneers can be placed with extraordinarily little preparation to the teeth before bonding. A small amount of the tooth must still be removed before the veneers are placed, allowing you the option of keeping more natural tooth structure in comparison to traditional porcelain veneers.
  • Prepless- This option requires no reduction to the natural teeth before placement. Prepless veneer shells are extremely thin porcelain pieces that lay over the existing teeth just like traditional porcelain veneers. If you are looking to correct several dental issues this may not be your best choice.
  • Composite- If you are looking for a more affordable veneer restoration, composite veneers can be your best option. There can be little to no preparation needed for the teeth before placing this restoration. Composite veneers can be just as effective in correcting dental concerns. They do not last as long, requiring replacement in five to ten years.

Comprehensive Dentistry

Comprehensive dentistry with Dr. Crystal Schneider, involves the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the teeth, gums and jaw. She believes that preventive care is the most important aspect of comprehensive dentistry. Dr. Schneider aims to identify and treat problems while they’re still small, which can save you time, money and more extensive dental treatment.

Cosmetic Dentistry

An attractive smile can boost your confidence, help you make better first impressions on others, and improve your personal and professional life. We provide several cosmetic dental treatments that can subtly enhance your smile, and there are many other more dramatic treatments, often called “smile makeovers,” that can give you the smile of your dreams.

Specialized Dentistry

Missing teeth can take the joy out of the everyday things we love, from smiling and talking with confidence to eating our favorite foods. All of these things can become easier again with specialized dental care. Dr. Schneider offers advanced treatments that will not just restore your smile to its former health – they’ll make it look and feel even better than before!

Porcelain Veneers Aftercare

You may experience some tooth sensitivity after your veneers are placed when encountering hot and cold foods or drinks. This side effect tends to subside in a few weeks.

After achieving your new smile, you will want to make sure you are taking the time to maintain your veneers to ensure a longer result. If you grind your teeth, you should wear a mouth guard while sleeping. Veneers do not do well with clenching and twisting and can result in cracking or fracturing. You will also be encouraged to avoid hard foods such as dense nuts or ice that can also cause stress on your veneers.
